Fanworks: Ancient

My Most Ancient Fandom History

(stories, essays, memes, drawings, etc)

The contact info on this page is only useful if you're traveling back in time to some point between 1999 and 2004 and want to find me then.

Back then, I used to go by the name "saavant." Yes, with a double A, like the Star Trek character Saavik. On Yahoo I added another extra A (because at one point the site glitched and I lost access to the account with my preferred spelling).

That was a long time ago. I no longer use the name saavant, or the yahoogroups handle saavaant, or the email address saavaant @ yahoo . com, or, for obvious reasons, the Geocities page geocities.com/saavaant.

But its mirror on Tripod still exists.

And so does a mirror on this site.

I've made up my mind to gather, here on AsterControl.com, as many of my previously posted online works as I can.

So, in the interests of completeness... I'm baring some of the most secret parts of my soul.

My very oldest internet fanworks-- stories, essays, memes, drawings, and Flash animations-- were posted under the name "saavant," starting in the year 2000.

When I made my first Star Trek fanfic website, it was on both Geocities and Tripod. I kept versions on both, just in case something happened to one.

Eventually "something" did, to Geocities. As of this writing -- in 2024-- the Tripod site is still up. But I'm mirroring it here, because anything could still happen.

Back then my fanworks also went up on Yahoogroups, on alt.startrek.creative and alt.startrek.creative.erotica.moderated, and on a few more private newsgroups. This was before AO3, before even Livejournal (well, before I got an invite to Livejournal, in 2002). It was before there were many people outside these newsgroups who even knew fanfiction existed.

And I was among the youngest there.

I was nineteen at the beginning, having just started college and gotten my very first internet connection. I began writing fanfic alongside some who'd been in fandom during, and long before, the very earliest days of the internet-- some who had grown up on print zines, back when the Original Series of Star Trek was still airing new episodes.

It was a vibrant community, or cluster of communities. There was thorough and scholarly analysis of canon; energetic brainstorming and collaboration on fanworks; fierce love and support for new fans. There were bitter conflicts, flamewars, vindictive discourse over everything from interpretations of canon to trends in fanfiction. In short, it was a complex world, similar in many ways to the others that still exist today, anyplace where human beings interact.

It's pretty much all lost, now. Most of the sites where this took place no longer exist.

I remember it, though. I'll always remember, and be thankful I had the chance to be part of that experience.

And I am still proud of... a few of these works.

(The rest make me cringe so hard it hurts.)

(However, they are a part of my history. So here they are.)

Saavant's Fanfiction

(Contains sexual themes.)

XXX in bright red-orange text. EXPLICIT MATERIAL.

The site should function more-or-less as it did back in the day. A few exceptions-- for instance, it used to have a few working links to Flash animations that I made. They no longer work, alas. (RIP Flash.)
