"Hi!" said Zefram Cochrane, sitting down next to abeautiful blonde. "If you need a date, this is theluckiest day of your life. I'm about to become aninternational hero. After devoting most of my life tospatial warp theories, I have finally discovered a waybetween two points that is shorter than a straightline!"

"Big deal," she replied. "I found one in gradeschool."

"Really?" sneered Zefram. "What way did you find?"

"A straight line segment," she answered, getting upand leaving.

Humiliated, Zefram devoted the rest of his life toperfecting his use of mathematical terminology.
