Imperfect but Out
Apr 19, 2025
So, one of the things we often point out as Flynn's mistakes leading to the events of TRON Legacy:
The way he put all his time and effort into a huge project... and kept it secret from everyone else... so there was no one to help him stop things going really bad, and so nobody outside even knew what'd happened to him, when he ended up irreversibly stuck in it and lost to the world.
His motivations are hard to imagine sometimes. But I think I can imagine this one: a desire not to let anyone see his work-in-progress until it was done. Until it was perfect.
We all know what perfectionism did to that world.
And this website has been more-or-less my version of that.
I have not had the time and energy available to complete all the parts of this enormous project yet, not with my day job and all of my other projects and what little I have of a social life.
Now, I'm in a slightly better place than Flynn for time-management, because I have neither a corporation to run nor a baby to raise. But I still have limited resources, and have not had the chance to get all of them laser-focused on this website long enough to get it to the point of Ready For The World.
But sometimes the world won't wait. And sometimes things that aren't ready for it just have to go out there and try their best.
At least, that's the thought that came into my mind recently with the latest existential threat to Tumblr. I mean, Tumblr's been "dying" for years and I'm not sure if the recent gutting of their staff is really the death knell or not... But....
But it did serve me as a stark reminder that social media sites in general are doomed-- since running a website takes money, and CEOs won't spend money except to make money, and the general populace of any social media site is not very inclined to be profitable. There's only so much ad revenue and personal-data-selling income that a website can squeeze out of you before it gives up. Some sites are farther away from that death than Tumblr, but all of them will eventually look it in the eye.
The world needs alternatives. And one alternative that shows some promise is just to go back to basics-- simple HTML websites, individually managed and run by those who care about them-- linked to each other in webrings, and discussed socially through decentralized communication methods like IRC and email lists.
Building HTML websites is one thing I do know how to do. Have been doing, for a long time.
And I'm just reaching the realization that-- if I don't open it up to other people before the sites we're on already start collapsing-- I am going to end up functionally trapped in a lonely little digital world of my own making, which never saw the light of day because it was waiting to be perfect.
Screw that.
Sooo. Here's my woefully unfinished website. Only the Tron fanfic page and the Mission Day Page are anything resembling complete. Everywhere else you go on the site you're gonna keep running into placeholder stubs. There's probably errors and broken links even in the stuff that looks done. I am downright embarrassed to be showing you this.
But it's either embarrassed or Kevin Flynn, and I am not Kevin friggin' Flynn.
My first priority for further work on this site is to complete the other Tron fanworks pages: Art, Essays, and Memes. I'm very proud of a lot of what I've created for the Tron fandom in the last few years, especially my detailed analyses and headcanons, so those are definitely a priority.
And, now that I've realized it-- so is communication about it all.
So please feel free to reach out to me via the various resources on my contact page.
Especially the email list.
We are going to need all the communication we can get, as time goes on.
