Oh, definitely agreed.

But I think the funniest self-insert characters are created accidentally, through bad writing, intended as villains or antiheroes, by creators who don’t realize that they themselves long ago became the very thing they claim to hate.

(And I think a good 70% of the fun of writing fanfiction is finding explanations for all this BS that make five hundred times more sense than whatever the writers had in mind, haha)
