fanonical:

‘ugh you’re writing fanfic about that, how cringe’ all fanworks are inherently a little bit cringe and i’d rather see something cringey and earnest than something cynical and irony-poisoned

Truth.

All beauty, of all types of art

(and every other evaluation besides beauty)

is to be found not in objective features of the art, but in the subjective response of the beholder

This is easily forgotten when the word used is something like “beauty” or “ugliness”

and for these cases we keep repeating proverbs like “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder” until they begin to sound meaningless

However, I have trouble understanding how the same fact is so easily forgotten when the word is “cringe”

a word literally referring to a facial expression made, in response to something, by one who beholds it

Cringe is in the sneering mouth of the beholder

If you’re cringing, that’s a you problem
