I cannot articulate just how much I hate the demand for employees to be trained in every department so they can be roped into a shift anywhere at any time

like, if you’re a person who works GREAT in the stockroom, organizing inventory, alone with your thoughts all day.

Might be your dream job, and you might be absolutely amazing at it! But you don’t get to have that job.

There aren’t stockroom workers anymore. You have a shift in the stockroom and then you have a shelving shift on the sales floor and then you have to do a shift at the mother fuckin checkout counter.

It’s like when the assembly line was invented and corporations were like:

- ok nobody gets to be a shoemaker who makes a whole shoe. Each person knows how to make 1 part of the shoe, and they all pass it on in a line.

- EXCEPT WAIT oh that’s actually not a good idea! because we’re not gonna spend the money on redundant staffing, and what if 1 person who knows how to make 1 part quits or gets sick or dies from overwork or something

-OK ACTUALLY Everyone has to learn how to make EVERY part of a shoe now! Except, you still don’t get to make them all at once. You just get put in a different point on the assembly line each shift

… nevermind, this is a bad analogy

because I would actually be totally FINE with getting switched out from one shoemaking-related shift to another all week.

The PROBLEM is that every available job will ALSO make me do shifts of getting yelled at by all the customers who hate the shoes (and giving me 0 access to anything that would permit me to actually help them, while also punishing me if they aren’t satisfied)
