As I understand it (correct me if I’m wrong)… “free” social media supported by advertising can (almost?) never be profitable, and the only reason any of the major social media sites have made money long enough to survive til now is by convincing shareholders that their value will increase in the future.
So theoretically, “purchasing Twitter and turning it into a paid subscription-based service with a much, much smaller (and stupider and eviler) userbase” might have *actually been* the only way to make it truly profitable.
But when you-know-who starts gloating about that, remember:
1. He’s proven the truth that rich a-holes like him keep trying to deny: “ever-increasing profit isn’t sustainable and sometimes a business getting smaller IS the only way to improve.”
2. It is a failure of society that we ever got to the point where a profit-driven business was providing the only available online public square for a large percentage of people in this nation.
