sometimes a character fights me so hard on the situation I’m putting them in and I realize this is exactly what happened to Terry Pratchett with Rincewind. the characterization is so solid that not only would he not fucking say that, he would not fucking be here. he would not be anywhere near this. he walked out three hours ago.
Is there an interview where Pterry talked about that?
not that I know of, but IIRC The Art of Discworld has a little aside about how Rincewind was basically retired as a character (put into the University to be a side character) because it had gotten so hard to force him into situations.
I love that Rincewind had a line in The Last Hero justifying his part in the story by saying “i dont want to be here.
And Vetinari said something like, then dont be here?
And Rincewind said something along the lines of, you dont understand. I could be on the other side of the disc but events will conspire to bring me here so here i am ahead of the shenanigans
yeah. my poor boy became fully aware of the narrative.
