…I mean, yeah, I agree with you about how fandom works these days. But I also agree with the OP of that post, in mourning that recent change.

Because, this status quo wasn’t always viewed as a “natural consequence” of corporations producing media. In the late 90’s/early 00’s when I was first getting into Star Trek online fandom, a huge percentage of the brand new fanfiction coming out was set in the TOS era, based on episodes aired from 1966 to 1969. Back then it was considered natural that a setting abandoned by the show’s creators became ours to play with forever.
