What the fuck is it about crafting games that makes people unable to pronounce the word “silicon”?

I think I’ve seen three people play Planet Crafter and all of them call the Silicon “Silicone”.

Quick refresher:

Silicon: glass and computer chips

Silicone: sex toys and breast implants

If you’re stranded on an alien planet with only a crafting toll to save you, you are PROBABLY going to be needing silicon more than silicone. Most likely.

so, Star Trek TOS has a spotty record with getting terminology right (I had to turn off certain episodes to take several deep breaths in recovery from absolutely everyone’s insistence on using “virus” and “bacteria” interchangeably)

HOWEVER. in the episode “The Devil In The Dark,” in which the (deeply misunderstood) antagonist is a silicon-based life form, the only person who mispronounces it as “silicone” is the head of the mining company, who was also so supremely oblivious that he misclassified “eggs about to hatch” as “silicon nodules with a few trace elements”

so well done there, star trek. that one time.
