6 hour workday maximum i’m not kidding, if it can’t be done in that timeframe it doesn’t need doing.

this doesn’t apply to jobs like childcare

If i worked in childcare and my 6 hours were up i would start putting babies in ziploc bags and shipping them to Turkmenistan listed as endangered fruits and vegetables

Every time I see this post it reminds me people have no idea what shift work is. You can have a business, daycare, hospital, anything, open 24/7 and only have individual people working 6 hours a day.

Same for fast food.

all this.

Another weird detail, about the mental blocks people have about the idea of work shifts:

so, there’s a few types of job schedules, right

there’s the type that’s basically unpredictable chaos. You get your work schedule a few days in advance of when you have to work, and it looks like it was made by throwing darts blindfolded at a calendar. nights, mornings, weekends, weekdays whatever. Pretty sure the majority of jobs in the US are this, and they are the low-paying, low-status jobs.

and then there’s the Monday-Friday, 9-5 job schedule that people often think of when they hear “work hours” even though it’s not nearly as ubiquitous as popular culture makes it seem

mostly, that second one is the type of schedule people prefer to have. I’ve had both kinds of jobs and I certainly prefer it.

The ONLY time I have ever been unhappy to have a stereotypical M-F, 9-5 job is… when I have needed to do a particular type of Official Task.

the type of Task –renewing a state ID, setting up a bank account, going to a doctor appointment, making a phone call about my insurance– that requires me to do business with certain types of Official Offices– which are pretty much absolutely necessary to life, but which are ONLY open during Stereotypical M-F, 9-5 Hours.

somehow, our society has decided that we can afford to have some businesses open All The Time, staffed constantly by people working in Whatever Chaos Shifts– and these include some really vital services, like emergency rooms and paramedics and so on– but mostly it’s stuff like freakin’ fast food and convenience stores and crap

whereas, the businesses that we need in order to have insurance, bank accounts, IDs, and regular non-emergency healthcare, HAVE to be staffed by M-F, 9-5 employees exclusively

meaning that M-F, 9-5 employees– including those who work in aforementioned Official Offices– are severely limited in their ability to be a documented person in society and use society’s official services for themselves

idk why society has decided this. but it is….. not good.
