this post’s hypothetical by itself is already ridiculous but the thing that gets me is how the wording implies two very funny things that become funnier in tandem
1. “Accidentally, the pitcher tosses a Christian baby” means this is a mistake on the pitcher’s part. i imagine the pitcher is breastfeeding on the field and they pitch and they look down at their hands and they see the ball still in the glove and they go “fuck”
2. hitting the baby will still win you the game
okay I pretty much never believe these “Christian baby” questions are anything but trolling…
but… like. This one makes even less sense than average, on soooo many levels
like. Most of them (that I’ve seen, anyway) are (supposedly) trying to catch an atheist in some sort of gotcha, like… “oh, you would never give up being an atheist? what if a Christian baby was dying and his last wish was for you to convert to Christianity” which is, like, already eight times removed from how the world works on any level
but… I guess, if I say “no,” then I’m cruel to the hypothetical baby… and if I say, yes, I would convert to Christianity to make a dying baby happy… in the nonsense world where that kind of thing happens… then I suppose they can claim I went against my own atheist principles and therefore all atheists are hypocrites or something
… but this one?? even if you cut out all the nonsensical-as-fuck baseball stuff, and boil it down to the essence of “would you kill or severely hurt a Christian baby for millions of dollars?” …that’s… even less of a gotcha. It has nothing to do with atheist principles. “baby death is acceptable exchange for millions of dollars” is not a viewpoint that goes with any cosmological view, it’s a viewpoint that goes with being a fucking CEO of an insurance company or something. And the baby being Christian (???) is irrelevant to anyone’s answer
I can sit and stare at this question for as many hours or days or years as I want, and I doubt I will ever be able to think of a reasoning in which my answer to this question somehow devalues my atheist beliefs
(unless… oh hell…. are they expecting that atheists will say yes? because, like, you aren’t a real atheist unless you want to murder the babies of the enemy religion– but if you do murder them, then you are a bad person? Is that the gotcha??)
