Daemons: a Recognizer theory

soooooo.

I have an inspiration that I do NOT currently have time to do anything with. BUT, I’m writing it down here, and if anyone else wants to use it in a fic please lemme know so I can read the heck outta that

anyway

• so, in programming, a “daemon” is a sorta assistant program that exists just to help another program.
• I don’t know why they called the Recognizers “demons” in Tron 82, or if anyone was even considering the programming definition when they wrote that line, but I don’t care I am gonna run with it

• so, suppose that the relationship between a Recognizer and its pilot is like the relationship between a program and the daemon that assists it.

• not sure if I want to imagine the Recognizer or the pilot as being the daemon…

• but the basic gist is the same. The Recognizer is a living program, like the pilot. And they have to have a special bond in order for the piloting to work
• it’s like a mech anime
• maybe the Recognizer has a humanoid form somewhere inside, like fused into an alcove in the center, and the pilot can interact with that
• this is all the reason why being able to control a Recognizer is a big deal. and why Ram was surprised when Flynn was able to do it

• but Flynn did more than just control the Reco. It was dead. Whatever consciousness was in it, had been derezzed. and Flynn brought it back to life.
• what if he did that by drawing life force from Ram?

• which was why Ram started dying right when this happened.
• except he didn’t die…

• look where his derezzing-sparkles go, as they disperse.
• Ram became the new consciousness of the Reco-mecha.

• and Flynn was able to pilot it from then on because of the bond of friendship/whatever that he’d previously built with Ram

• Of course, as with everything Flynn does in the whole movie, he’s oblivious to what’s going on

• so, he doesn’t realize that when he crashes the thing, he’s leaving Ram there all alone, with no one but that poor Bit to keep him company
• (maybe this is why Bit seems to voluntarily let itself get trapped inside the Recognizer there. Maybe it realized that it would rather hang out with Ram than this doofus)

….my point is.

What if this crashed Reco just sits there for a while, unused…

because no one else can form the bond necessary to restore it and get it running again, to become the new daemon-pilot of the Reco-mecha…

…until Tron comes along.

fanfic can take that and run with it.
