Among many strange details, this very old apartment I’m living in has:


- A pull-out trash can receptacle (?) (closed on the bottom, but maybe used to be an opening to a trash chute?)


- a whole second door, visible from the outer hallway right next door to the entrance to my apartment, but this one opens to the kitchen (or did, once, it’s now permanently fastened shut)


But I’ve never felt quite as much kinship with the poor, violated designer of this place, as I did today

when I’d just finished compensating for the bathroom’s sad lack of a built-in fan by setting up a floor fan pointed towards the window and connected to an easily-reached power switch, and wondering “what if there were a way to open the window from across the room too?”

…and, upon closer examination of the window, noticing for the first time that

- THERE USED TO BE
