erikahammerschmidt:

That post going around about the Spanish translation of “nonbinary” as “no binaria” (feminine) and “no binario” (masculine) sets off very conflicting responses in me

the Rational Person side of me finds it nonsensical and horrible

however, the Creative Etymology side of me (which is itself nonsensical and horrible) thinks it is hilarious

because, imagine if we had different words for nonbinary that were all based on specifying what kind of binary you are not

we got all your different kinds of binary here! come get your binary or lack thereof

We got Binary Male! if you are not this, then you are “no binario.” that’s your word, “no binario.” Includes all the binary ladies, as well as everyone who doesn’t subscribe to a gender binary or any binary at all! As long as you’re not the Binary Male, you can call yourself “no binario”

same deal on the Binary Female side! All you ungendered, unbinaried, and un-ladies? All you gentlemen, all you genderless, all those who are not on the female side of the gender binary? you are all “no binaria

we’ve also got the non-gendered binary! The stuff that is binary, but is not gender! Like the kind your motherboard used to make! Ones and zeroes, folks! …oh, you’re not that? You don’t live in a computer? then you are “no binarie” (okay, we’ll have to work with actual Spanish speakers to fine-tune the right word to use for this, but trust us, you can be binary and genderless, as long as you’re committed to the bit! …But hey, if you’re not that, then this is the label for you!)

…yeah. horrible nonsense, everyone.
