Fairy tale kidnapped-bride trope scenario… bad guy captures good guy’s love interest, tries to force her to marry him, that whole deal
Robin Hood-esque scene where they get halfway through the exchange of vows, the bad guy says his “I do,” and the kidnapped bride is reluctant to say hers, etc
and she stalls just long enough for the hero to rescue her just in time, yada yada
But it’s in an old-fashioned world with no divorce and strict-as-hell adultery laws, and before written marriage contracts, where the words spoken at a wedding are what legally seal the union
So bad guy is now trapped in a half-married limbo state, where HE is beholden to stay faithful to HER, and any fooling around that he ever does is adultery, punishable by death
But SHE didn’t agree to her part of the contract so she’s free to marry the Hero and run off to live happily ever after and never lay eyes on Bad Guy ever again. Trapped him in an incel hell of his patriarchy’s own making. heck yeah
