In the before times, there were many gods. One of them was a real shitty one and wasn’t even really a full god, but he still wanted to be the One True God and be worshiped to the exclusion of all others
And he grabbed one of the other ones, a real god but one who was still kinda small-time and disgraced, who had gotten too sassy and pissed him off. and he trapped him in the world of the mortals
Where this small-time real god had basically no idea what to do, but bumbled his way to lucky success anyway
Which ended in him slaying the evil fake god who brought him there. And then ascending back to the heavens
But some came to believe that he and the fake god simply merged, and are now both aspects of One Being
He now rules a world of his own, in which he displays aspects of the evil fake god (“appropriating” people away from their original place in the world to use for his own purposes; presenting himself as the one singular Creator and the only god that anyone can ever have contact with)
So the religion now equates him and the fake god as the same being, and both are True, and all others are false deities. The sacred texts have been rewritten
