Queer gamers nowadays don’t know how strapped we were for representation back in the day. They don’t know anything about Mass Effect or Borderlands. All they know is Baldur’s Gate 3, hot chip and lie
They don’t understand how big a deal it was that you could be gay in The Sims 1 and have gay marriages in The Sims 2
It’s funny how common this was cause the exact same thing happened in Borderlands 2. Axton was gonna be straight but they forgot to code him to NOT flirt with male characters. Back then, queer rep often happened by accident, and that was all you had.
I’ve never been much for videogames myself, but I fondly remember sitting with my partner and her friends while they played Fable, one of the first games where you could romance a same-sex NPC.
My partner at the time was still many years from realizing she was a trans lesbian, but she was playing a woman character and romancing another woman character in the game. And she was doing this in co-op mode with her friend, who was a guy playing a guy character.
So when she went to bed with her NPC wife, her guy friend’s character was just… standing around nearby
AND HER WIFE GOT PREGNANT
…apparently the game mechanics were set up so that pregnancy could happen if a male character was present, at all, even if not involved in the sex.
Bro was standing there ready with the turkey baster, I guess. Best wingman ever.
