a fact which i think is much less well-known than the existence of Goatse itself.

the “goatse” page was originally a similar joke to this “spidersge” one.

it was originally intended to be pronounced “goat sex,” because its original extension was .cx, one of the country code top-level domains that back then were the only alternatives to stuff like .com, .net and .org

.cx is the country code for Christmas Island. if I remember correctly, Goatse briefly went through using the .cz (Czech) country code after it got kicked off the cx one.

…to anyone lucky enough not to know what Goatse is, please think carefully before trying to find out. it is… sexually explicit in a way intended to shock and grossout. that’s about it, nothing much more to it. there is nothing in it that actually involves goats, at least. Small mercies.

I am not sure exactly how well-known Goatse is among present-day generations of internet users. but definitely, viewer discretion advised. (Because the makers of the page itself sure as hell weren’t being discreet themselves, so someone’s gotta do it)
