every kind of fish is real
California bees can be fish and have the same protections, a court has ruled | CNN
EVERY kind of fish
The relevant issues here -
“[p]lant and animal species may be designated threatened or endangered under CESA after a formal listing process by the California Fish and Game Commission.”
covered species include “native species or subspecies of a bird, mammal, fish, amphibian, reptile, or plant[.]”They needed to declare some kinds of bees as endangered species. The law didn’t specifically mention insects. BUT!
the code defines “fish” as “a wild fish, mollusk, crustacean, invertebrate, amphibian, or part, spawn, or ovum of any of those animals.”
Bugs are invertebrates.
So endangered bugs are legally fish.
I love how many reasons and how many methods there are for declaring something a fish
California: we want to conserve this animal and the law about conserving animals defines fish in a way that COULD include it, so we will
Catholicism: we want to eat this animal on Fridays in Lent, and it spends some of its time in the water so that makes it a fish as much as any of the seafood we already include under that rule
Evolutionary biology: there is literally no way to define fish so it might as well be everything, lol
