“it saves me time writing stuff” it saves me time knowing you dont give a shit enough to just write something simple. if you didn’t care enough to write it, why should i be interested in reading it?
“i’m not good at writing X so it helps me” alright then practice. it gets easier and you end up not writing like AI slop
“i just have it write something then i edit it to make it right” the meat of your content is couched in AI garbage. why’d you use it to fluff your information? i’d rather read something barebones that gets to the point if it’s accurate than something that ChatGPT churns out
i wrote all this with informative/communicative writing in mind. i.e. chat, emails, documentation. if you use it for creative writing you might be hopeless
also if you use it as a search engine you might as well just stick with the wooden dog that flips a nickel
at my last job someone used it to generate documentation for best practices around some code architecture we were following. i read it. none of it made sense for what we were doing because it had no context. it was relying on definitions of things that were different than what we were doing so it was flat-out wrong
so i says to the guy i says, “hey this is all wrong, here’s why” and explain how none of what ChatGPT gave us is pertinent to our work. and he goes “well whatever we can use this as a starting point.”
and i couldnt understand how you could use information that is 98% wrong as a starting point. it’s like needing a recipe for bread and chatgpt gives you a muffin recipe. so there’s flour and salt, that’s where the similarities stop.
anyways he finally got the point and someone else ended up writing the document. but thats what i mean by pod people shit. dont look me in the eye and tell me something like this is helpful.
This reminds me a lot of how translation has become almost impossible as a job for a human to have, because companies use translation software and then have a human “edit” it.
The translation software often does a 98% bad job. The person doing the “editing” often has to rewrite the entire thing.
But since they’re hired for “checking the results of a translation” instead of “doing a translation,” they can be paid practically nothing.
Some people who use software for human jobs actually think it’ll work as well. But some are just trying to cheat workers out of money for doing the same work.
