the criticism was that becoming reliant on reading and writing can reduce any natural ability you have at memorizing and passing on stories and knowledge through oral tradition
which does show there have always been criticisms of “being reliant on new technology”
however
It has always been true that some criticisms of “being reliant on new technology” are more valid than others
books and writing – even as they reduce the incentive to maintain our rote-memorizing muscles– make up for it a thousand times over, in giving us access to knowledge and human stories we could never have seen otherwise
and chatgpt doesn’t even give you actual knowledge in exchange for atrophying your ability to research
