Because canon would never pair those characters (usually for homophobic reasons, but sometimes also plot reasons like “nobody can have a lasting romance ever, because every episode has to end back at baseline status quo”)

so usually if we wanted a ship to happen we had to do it our damn selves

Unless it was one of the few canon relationships, which were barely explored but usually soooo heteronormative and uninteresting and if there was anything compelling about them at all it got virtually noooo screen time

In which case, any fanworks we did about that were to FIX what canon dropped the ball on

Which was the same reason we didn’t fucking WANT canon to adopt any of our noncanon ships. Because THEY WOULD FUCK IT UP like they did every ship that WAS canon
