re: my last two reblogs

(about Dreamwidth and Element/Revolt)

(and maybe also my older post about email lists)

…it sucks that we keep having to consider these possibilities.

But as long as platforms keep enshittifying in search of profit, they won’t remain usable for long, and we’ll have to keep moving.

that said, these options feel like possibly more stable than others, at the moment.

it’s important to remember, though:

lately I’ve seen a lot of posts with people saying what they love about Tumblr.

and it almost never includes anything about the site’s technical features, or its policies.

it’s always about the culture.

the way people treat each other, the sorts of things people like to do here

and that’s not a trait of a website.

that’s a trait of a community.

often, it’s not even “the community of all people on this website.”

often it’s more “the community of people I have chosen to connect with on this website.”

which means. no matter how much a platform is similar to Discord or similar to Tumblr in terms of its features, it won’t have the same feel for you without the same people.

and conversely, if you can get enough of the people you care about to follow you somewhere– you could rebuild something like the community you had before, on pretty much any platform.

because the people are what matters.

don’t forget that.

Anyway. In case you wanna include me in the connections you take wherever you go, here’s my page of contacts.

among other things, I’m now Astercontrol on Dreamwidth, astercontrol:matrix.org on Element, and Astercontrol#7121 on Revolt.

we will persist.

love you all, programs.
