I love things whose names sound like the opposite of what they are, but only because of their relationship to something else that was even more the opposite of that name, but has now fallen out of style.
go looking for a razor. most of what you find are the common multi-blade disposable razors.
but you might also see some “safety razors.”
Are they safer than the others? Haha no.
Maybe for the environment, because they use less disposable material. But compared to those common disposable ones, they are quite a lot more likely to cut you.
so why are they are called “safety” razors?
Only because they are pretty safe compared to the really old-fashioned “straight razors.”
Which are the least common type you’ll find.
go shopping for a bike.
try and decide what type of pedals to get on it.
the most popular options are “flat pedals” and “clipless” pedals.
guess which one HAS clips?
…yep. the clipless pedals have them.
so what does the clipless pedal NOT have?
well. it doesn’t have a toe-strap/toe-cage.
which really doesn’t look much like a “clip,” does it.
But it was called a clip. And it had that name first.
who cares that it’s now the least popular kind of pedal.
and who cares that the clipless pedal is the one that most obviously HAS clips.
the name’s been decided. too late to change it.
language is awesome
