Programs aren’t beholden to their programming. They can and will go beyond that. As a hobby or as a job or as an ambition. They have free will.

(… funnily enough I just wrote a fic exploring the theory that the Encom system in the ‘82 movie has ISOs too, and that’s who the Inoperative Data Pushers are. I didn’t get into the question of Encom programs calling themselves a little bit ISO – though I do think it’d almost fit them, spontaneous as their sentience is. I just had some discussion of labels, how some of them were okay with the name Data Pushers and others preferred to be called ISOs. And also some of them were Automata. My connection-making Pattern Recognizer reallllly went overboard in that fic.)
