so I told my friend the cashier about that “cashier test” where you judge how Terminally Online a viewpoint is by whether a cashier would be justified in jumping over the counter and beating the shit out of you if you said it while checking out. And she was like, “okay but… besides that one example (the one where you tell the cashier they’re complicit in their own oppression by working that job) …what other Terminally Online viewpoints could you actually expect cashiers, as a monolithic group, to share a strong angry opinion on? Cashiers are all different people. They’ve got different politics and everything. And most of the opinions people fight over on the internet are ones where cashiers might take either side or might not even care, who the hell knows, it depends on the cashier. The only ones all cashiers have got a fair chance of agreeing on are the ones that apply to their job specifically. And most of the time, all of you are in agreement that their job sucks and they’re the oppressed victims– and mostly they’d agree with you on that! So they wouldn’t be justified in beating you up, because they’d have no reason to even wanna beat you up, even if you took that sentiment farther than they personally would. So… I mean, like, the vast majority of opinions you can’t even test that way? Because, number one, unless it’s actually about cashiers, cashiers are gonna all have different opinions and most of the time only maybe a fifth of them would be angry enough to want to jump over the counter and beat your ass for it in the first place. And number two, the ones who’d want to can’t, because they’d lose their jobs for it, so you have zero way of even knowing if they’d want to or not, let alone consider it justified. Plus, if someone wants to beat your ass and is held back only by fear of unemployment, then of course they will consider the beating justified, and if it’s because of your opinion then of course you won’t consider it justified, so who even decides if it’s justified enough to pass this bizarre test?” And then she jumped over the counter and beat the shit out of me.
