so you know how sellers of homeopathic remedies are happy to encourage the obscuring of what the term “homeopathic” means


because when people know that “homeopathic” means diluted until there’s nothing in it anymore except water, they often don’t wanna buy it


but when people think “homeopathic” can mean pretty much any herbal remedy, they won’t check too closely before buying something labeled as that


so if you’re selling water claiming it’s a medicine, you actually benefit from this expansion of the word usage, and the co-opting of your word by other sellers

because it increases the chance of customers buying your homeopathic product, because they confuse it with a real medicine, or at least a real something


it is strange because in most markets this sort of thing doesn’t work.

in most markets, sellers who use a label don’t want sellers of a different thing using the same label


in most markets, “brand dilution” isn’t a good thing
