It’s surreal to have been through a time on Tumblr that feels like just a few years ago, when the prevailing voices I tended to see in discourse – usually calling themselves progressive and leftist– were proclaiming that books about bigotry against marginalized ethnic groups should not be assigned in classrooms at all, because it would be traumatic for students from those marginalized groups… and books describing sexual assault shouldn’t be assigned without heavy content warnings, because they could be triggering for victims of sexual assault….

And then to see this recent shift, where it’s treated as if those same opinions have always been oppressive right-wing talking points– aimed at sheltering white kids from feeling uncomfortable, or aimed at convincing CSA victims that their trauma doesn’t exist

I mean… Hell, I don’t even know what is the best actual way to approach this sort of material in schools. But it feels so weird to see people rewriting the past few years as if progressive discourse never had a hand in shaping this at all.
