re: last reblog
i am somewhat conflicted. as a person who pretty much does not use any streaming service at all
I feel that the “yet you participate in society!” reference should be reserved for when someone criticizes you for doing things that society makes it genuinely nearly impossible to avoid.
Like using a smartphone, or making transactions online. Things that you literally have to do sometimes in order to still have a job, a residence, bills paid to survive.
but, unless your livelihood requires online video meetings, streaming is pretty much 100% for entertainment, and it’s entertainment that SUCKS
why. why would I go to YouTube to watch five minutes of ads and then listen to someone rant about someone else’s rants on YouTube. Why the fuck would i have a Spotify account or a Netflix account – with ads even if i fucking pay for it– if i can buy DVDs or CDs at the thrift store. “Oh this show/movie isn’t available on dvd anywhere” then i guess it isn’t worth watching, huh, they should have thought of that before making that decision. “No it’s really really good i promise, ive watched it, you’ll like it” then make me a copy.
And yet. And yet, I won’t claim to have clean hands. I also do stuff sometimes that’s bad for society/environment and is just for entertainment. “Participating in society” doesn’t require any specific version of this, but it does require some version, somehow, if you want a life with enjoyment in it.
So i don’t know.
