I do not care about how “dated” the visuals look I am still blown away by them. Both because the style is so wonderful and interesting but also because I know when this was made. Making something like this in the early 80’s? Can’t even begin to imagine the sheer amount of hours put into this.

I’m a sucker for synths and garish 80’s visuals, okay? One of the main complaints I’ve heard is that the visuals make the action scenes hard to take seriously. I’d maybe agree if this happened in a non-cyber world, but I was so immersed that it made perfect sense to me.

I also love a lot of modern art with styles that actively emulate older low-poly graphics and in indie works this is very much commonplace.

I also feel like it executes the tropes it wants to do pretty well. I have seen so many bad “Ooo we’re in a video game!!” movies and TV episodes that it is downright shocking to see it done so well. I guess it only went down from here. I guess it’s because they aren’t ashamed to actively integrate the characters into the digital environment. They aren’t just guest, they are active parts of the world. I love that.

I love a movie with a style that is unapologetically its own.
