Yeah, the time difference is striking. It was definitely equivalent to a thousand years or more from inside the computer – whatever that exactly means to programs.
I imagine that meaning is different for the programs. Especially since their lives are capable of being so long, and they can’t create new programs.
A lot of what causes human societies to change is the fact that humans die and are replaced with new humans, whose experiences, and therefore worldviews, aren’t the same as the previous ones.
One interesting speculation (which was explored at some depth in “17776”) is the idea that if people lived indefinitely and didn’t reproduce, society would remain the same in some ways for unimaginably long times.
And would change vastly over time in other ways– not the same ways it currently changes.
…..Aaand now, with 17776 on the brain, I want to see the evolution of program football.
