gotta be honest I just fundamentally don’t get the concept of hatewatching. like sure I’ve put a dumb movie on during a get together with friends to get silly entertainment out of it. but whenever another disney live action remake or harry potter thing or whatever comes out and I have to see posts on my dash being like “boycott it! if you REALLY have to see how bad it is at least pirate it!!” I’m always like. bitch you live like this? you watch movies you know you’ll hate? you take time out of your day - and you have a limited number of days on this earth - to watch a movie you’ll hate, when there are so many great movies in the world that you could love? I’ll never understand it.
I have no idea why people get that urge– to actively seek out things they’ll hate– but it’s probably the same feeling as those posts where someone complains about the result of blocking a tag on Tumblr
how it causes you to see posts that are basically nothing but “you don’t want to see this, it’ll upset you” followed by a “tempting button that you really wanna press”
like… why would you find that button tempting? why would you experience any desire to press it?
because i guess, for many people, there’s something enjoyable about feeling outrage
i mean, I do relate! I can enjoy a good complainy rant about something I don’t like or understand!
(honestly? This post is one! And I’m enjoying it!)
But for me, there has to be 1. a limit on just how much of the actual bad thing I see, and 2. a balancing ratio of clever things said about it from a viewpoint (preferably multiple viewpoints) that I agree with
And I guess, when you click on a post containing a tag you’ve blocked, you don’t know whether you’ll get something fitting those criteria that’ll make it fun for you, or if it’ll just leave you in a miserable rage.
And same for watching a movie you know you’ll hate. You probably shouldn’t watch it alone, if anything. You should bring friends to MST3k it with you
But even so, there is NO guarantee that the catharsis of all your combined complaining will be enough to balance out the ugliness of what you’re complaining about. It still might end up well outside “fun complainy rant” and well within “miserable rage.”
It’s a risk you should think about before you take it.
