Anonymous:
Legacy arguably falls into the the soft retcon category now. By all appearances, Ares seems far more like an 82' sequel. The absence of Tron notwithstanding.

Hm, valid point.

I always found it a little unsettling, how Legacy left it so open to interpretation just what ‘82 was– like, did Flynn experience exactly that? Or is it just how Flynn remembers it? Or how he told it to his son? Or is it the in-universe movie loosely based on whatever Flynn actually experienced? What really happened in 1982? Who knows! Not relevant to this story! Lol!

It does certainly seem that Ares is going to address the details of '82 a lot more than Legacy did. Not only the Flynn scenes in the trailer, but there’s also apparently a scene with people dressed up in 82-style costumes… I’m a bit curious to see how that fits into any of it.

As always, though, I am personally soft-and/or hard-retconning whichever parts don’t appeal to me, for purposes of my own fanworks. That’s how Star Trek fan writers did things back in my earliest days of fandom, and it’s still the way of life that works for me. Fiction is fiction.
