I think we can decide what “active” means to us.
If Disney never makes another Tron movie for fifty years, but fans keep making fic and art with all the same enthusiasm, it may not be an active franchise (with all the corporate connotations of that word) but it’ll still be an active fandom, and that’s what matters to me.
I know, it’s unlikely that fans will keep the same enthusiasm about a franchise so long abandoned by its corporate owners… but as long as there are even a few of us being active as fuck, that’s still active.
Monetizable, corporate content is not what makes a fandom.
The wishes and loves and energy of the fans is what makes a fandom.
