I’m predicting that in a few years, people will come around to Tron: Ares and it’ll be a cult classic, just like Tron and Tron: Legacy. It just needs some time to percolate and for people to stop comparing it to Legacy.
yeah.
this happens with not only Tron, but with everything from a popular enough franchise
i remember how much everyone hated the Prequel series of Star Wars when it came out on the early 00s. I remember the outrage over some aspects of it being as intense as the current outrage over Jared Leto
(especially the view of Jar Jar Binks as a racist caricature, which a lot of more recent analyses of that character’s unpopularity seem to just… outright forget?)
….I don’t think there was an actor in there who was as notorious for real-life misconduct as Leto. But there were definitely people equally upset about some of the moviemaking decisions (which in some cases they considered to be real-life harm, e.g. racism)
and I mean, I was never more than a peripheral observer of Star Wars so I never had a pod in that race, personally.
But… I did see how the hate mellowed out over the years, until eventually the prequels got treated almost the same as the first three movies. Like they’d become such an integral part of the canon that it no longer even was something you could have an out-of-universe opinion on. it was just what had ‘really happened’ in that world.
and I think this very often happens when a whole new generation of fans has grown up with something in their canon.
They just accept it. and a lot of the time they don’t even think about having an opinion on whether it should have been made that way. because as far as they are concerned, it wasn’t made, it’s just always existed.
and they get just as angry as the last generation did, but only about the new stuff coming out now. an affront to history! ruining their treasured childhood!
every single generation. over and over.
