I've been thinking about this for some time but the original 1982 film has yet another link to retro gaming: The use of pre-rendered backgrounds. The fact that their (mostly) static. There are no character shadows or environmental lighting. No depth of field. The foreground characters seem oddly separated from the environment. It's all very reminiscent of early Playstation one games.

Mmm, yeah true, and it does make sense because Tron pioneered the very early computer graphics that eventually led to those games.
