when I see that quote about the creator of Veggie Tales trying to make the show without “showing the vegetables praying” or implying that “vegetables can have a redemptive relationship with God,” half of me is going, “wtf, the whole point of making children’s fiction with anthropomorphic characters is for the kids to imagine themselves in the place of those characters, so if you want to teach children they should pray to God for redemption, then you HAVE to show the sympathetic characters doing that, no matter what sort of anthropomorphic thing they are… come to think of it, maybe that’s actually WHY VeggieTales did so well even among pretty secular populations? and why I keep seeing it get talked about favorably even by people who usually tend to be really really suspicious of Christian propaganda for kids? because maybe, the fact that they tried NOT to show the veggies having a relationship with God, caused them to focus more on sorta… generally good and kind and non-denominationally nice lessons to teach children, and thus avoid being the really obnoxious propaganda it could’ve been? huh…”
…And the other half of me is just giggling and singing, “no Jesus for us pea-ses”
