the whole Pantone thing (treating this color company like it isn’t a horrible joke and they have some kind of actual authority on the “color of the year,” whatever the hell that even means)
is reminding me of how when I first saw The Devil Wears Prada, the “cerulean” speech got like, actual admiration for the character from the people I was watching it with, as if they found the actual message of the speech wise and insightful or something??
and meanwhile i was just sitting there thinking “okay this is a fantastic acting job at portraying an insufferably pretentious asshole, who has lived her life in a bubble so out of touch with reality that she thinks ‘the commercial history of using the color cerulean in making clothes’ is in any way remotely relevant to anything important whatsoever. This scene illustrates the protagonist’s utter disorientation as she falls into the one twisted place in existence where this would be considered important, and where knowing about it does make you better-qualified than a person who does not know about it– even though, to any rational person from the real world, that speech sounds like going off on an unhinged tirade at someone because they used the letter O without having an encyclopedic knowledge of all the times it’s been used in advertisements.”
