whenever there’s some sort of disaster and people immediately hoard toilet paper before anything else, my mind always goes to a specific memory

because toilet paper is not even slightly a thing you HAVE to have. Not like food and water. You can use all sorts of other things as toilet paper. Kleenex and paper towels and paper napkins, as long as you put them in the trash instead of the toilet. If you’re stuck in your house and you still have running water you can even take a bath or shower after every time you use the toilet, what’s stopping you

so when people immediately jump to toilet paper before any other necessities to stock up on, my brain immediately goes to a whole lot of years ago, and a memory of a meme going viral all around Tumblr

….that I worry I may have fabricated entirely in my mind, because if it was real, I feel sure that i would have seen some Tumblr people at least mention it in all the time since then

Mostly because i remember it as being from Supernatural. and on Tumblr nothing from Supernatural ever truly dies

Anyway. it was from a time in the show when an apocalypse was supposed to be coming and someone was warning people to “hoard toilet paper like it’s made of gold”

and the only reason that stuck in my head, was because if you actually did that– hoarded toilet paper as if it was gold– you would not even hoard very much of it.

If it was made of gold, you’d need only a fairly small supply of it to have more wealth than you’d ever know what to do with. And (as with all money-hoarding by those already rich) further hoarding could do nothing at all to improve your life. It would just take up space (and be quite heavy doing so).

And that lesson, stuck in my head so long, is gonna come out now.

Hoard toilet paper like it’s made of gold! Meaning, buy like a 24-pack and just stop. If every roll in there was solid 24k gold sheet, you would not need any more, fucking trust me
