that’s some real glass ceiling shit how it’s Walter Gibbs’ theory but it’s Lora Baines’ program doing all the work
Here’s the thing: I don’t think there’s anything nefarious happening, I think it’s the complete opposite.
Encom’s management under Dillinger may have created a workplace atmosphere that was hostile towards female engineers. We sorta see this as an echo on the other side of the screen (Why did Sark and the MCP insist on having an all-(presenting) male force of warrior elites? Why were the female programs specifically forced to work in the solar sailer hangar?)
Walter had the theories about digitization, but I could see a situation where he insisted on having Lora be the main lead in the project, because Lora is 1) fully qualified for all the responsibilies and technical knowledge, and 2) to prove to Dillinger that his sexist workplace views are antiquated and bullshit.
They definitely have a deep respect for each other.
yeah!
I mean I agree that Encom under Dillinger probably does have a glass-celing/sexism problem (more focused on profits than on any of the employees’ wellbeing, honestly… and sexism does tend to happen under those kinds of circumstances)

and I also agree that Gibbs is sticking around largely to do whatever work he can against those problems on the ground level
honestly, I get the feeling (just from what’s shown onscreen in the 82 movie, there’s probably other lore but I’m going by onscreen canon) that Lora and Gibbs collaborated as equals or nearly-equals on the whole thing.
I mean, I think the only actual reference to Gibbs’ theory is Lora talking about a specific theory of his (about how to improve the digitizing process)…

Gibbs does infodump in a way that I’ve seen some people describe as mansplaining… but to me it feels more like he’s playing around with the words and philosophical concepts involved, rather than trying to show off scientific knowledge:

now, if you want an example of Gibbs infodumping in a way that DOES show off scientific knowledge–
we have that! But it’s when he talks to Alan– after Alan has said something that could be seen as a little patronizing about the importance of the science that Gibbs and Lora are doing:

so yeah, I do think that despite the glass-ceiling problem the company has, Gibbs respects Lora and tries to stick up for her whenever possible.
And whether or not they were equal partners in coming up with the theoretical parts of the experiment, we know the laser itself is Lora’s:
