there is one person at my work who makes a point of always overworking herself half to death no matter how much pain she’s in, and rubbing it in everyone’s face, like any time someone says ‘i’m tired’ she’ll respond by asking them exactly how much sleep they got and then tell them she got less

and she makes me imagine a version of Omelas where literally nobody’s life is actually good, they just all feel an obligation to say it’s good because they’re all constantly forced to be aware that there’s someone worse off than them
