To gender yourself is a difficult matter;
It isn’t just one of your holiday games.
To prove it’s the former instead of the latter,
Consider your gender in three different frames.
First, there’s the gender for colleagues and bosses
And family you wish would just give you some room.
You might simply pick Boy or Girl, cut your losses
And make sure it matches what people assume.
Then there’s the gender for friends who are trusted,
And these are permitted a much wider range;
A true friend has viewpoints that can be adjusted
And knows how to love you the whole time you change.
So now Genderfluid becomes a contender,
And likewise Agender or Nonbinary,
Or even a phrase that’s not typically gender,
like “CRT static” or “TRON: Legacy.”
But language just hints at ideas when you hear it.
And no word can quite reach its goal, all the way.
A gender you feel in the depth of your spirit
Cannot quite be put into words you can say.
So maybe, sometimes, you just sit there and feel it.
With feelings, not words, tell yourself what is true.
And this, though you can’t quite completely reveal it
Is what gender means to specifically you.
The true inexpressible
