having seen only the first 2 Shrek movies, long enough ago for the memories to be vague, is great. Because I can just assume stuff that lets me imagine the whole series the way I want it
for instance, obviously there must have been a point in the later movies when they riffed on Ratatouille, right. Like, some rat shows up who’s an accomplished knight, better at horseback riding than anyone else– he can even control Donkey. And Donkey hates this, not least because of all the jokes about “a rat’s ass”
i can be like, of course that happened, that’s not a thing they’d fail to think of, right
watch fewer sequels, it makes life so much better
this is one of the Pattern Recognizer’s imaginative skills, related to the canon-compliant headcanoning one, but not identical. The canon-compliant headcanoning is about interpretation of the parts I do know and remember.
for example: the scene where Shrek and Fiona make balloon animals out of real animals that they’ve inflated with their breath
the fact that both the balloon animals then float up into the sky, proves two things
-ogres inhale regular air and exhale a lighter-than-air gas
-foreshadowing of how Fiona turns out to be an ogre
the most plausible explanation is that the gas is hydrogen instead of helium (much easier to turn regular atmosphere into that; wouldn’t require atomic fission)
which would also mean their breath is, or at least can be, extremely flammable
the existence of fire-breathing dragons in the same world suggests that they share the same biological trait
and the fact that those are capable of interbreeding with donkeys perhaps implies that ogres, dragons and donkeys are all more closely related than one might expect
i will continue not watching sequels though, because I still do not wish to be exposed to any potential evidence against my awesome headcanons
