Just watched the 1982 Tron movie and oml- I fully expected something silly but the relevance to modern times was astounding.

It was so genuinely good. Profound, wonderful sets, costume design works so well- all its jankiness was still phenomenal to me because I feel like it was a great show of CGI for the time- it was great for its time. I am frothing.

I KNOW RIGHT!! And the jankiness of the special effects works because it’s set inside a computer where any visual glitches could just be canonical computer glitches in-universe. Stroke of genius.

Not to mention how incredibly fresh the storyline was– it broke a whole lot of tired tropes about how everything in a story is “supposed” to go (especially the romance storyline!) and I honestly haven’t seen anything so delightfully outside the box in a very long time.

Of course I do hate that it’s owned by Disney, and I wish Lisberger and Macbird had gotten to make it as an independent film the way they originally planned. But I do like that, even so, it ended up being the least Disneyish of all Disney movies I’ve ever seen. Rock on.

And the fandom is fantastic. The whole franchise is so… incomplete and disconnected, on the level of the source material. But that attracts some of the most amazingly creative fans, with the coolest ideas about making all the disconnected and unexplained things make sense– and it’s sooo good. (And it’s generally a really chill and accepting fandom, with lots of mutual respect for all these different headcanons. I love it here.)
