When your doctor prescribes you the generic

More like when your doctor prescribes you the brand name, and the pharmacy tries to get it changed to the generic because obviously your insurance won’t cover the brand, but we can’t without contacting your doctor because they checked the “dispense as written” box when entering the prescription, and so the system insists the DOCTOR says the brand name is medically necessary, so we can’t get it covered by anything until the doctor picks up their damn phone, and then when they finally do it turns out they had no idea what the med costs, how insurance works, or what the “dispense as written” box means

Hey @astercontrol, genuine question: what doess dispense as written mean, then, and why WOULD they need to check it?

It means “don’t change the brand,” and it should only be checked if there is an actual, important reason why the brand shouldn’t be changed. For instance, if the patient has an allergy to an inactive ingredient that other manufacturers add, and this brand is the only one known not to have it.

Insurance still might reject because of this. Pharmacy still might need to contact the doctor so they can do a prior authorization explaining to the insurance company why the brand is necessary.

But some doctors will just check the “dispense as written” box because they don’t know what it means and think it sounds like a good thing.
