I wonder if chicken gender transitions are recognized by law

Like.

Y'know how a hen can have something happen to an ovary and just spontaneously start changing – looking and acting like a rooster

And you know how there’s regulations on keeping chickens, and the regulations are stricter if you have a rooster

Does a sex-changed rooster count for that?

I’m gonna assume yes

Because the complaints that your neighbors could have about a rooster all have to do with behaviors that the hen-to-rooster trans chicken would also develop (loud crowing, aggression)

And I’m gonna assume this was true throughout history, that they’d be treated like roosters (which often just meant getting eaten, because farmers typically want more hens than roosters, you really only need one rooster for a flock)

Because I remember my grandmother once quoted an old rhyme to me that went:

“whistling girls and crowing hens

always come to some bad ends ”

…this rhyme was so old and morally outdated that my grandmother presented it as a thing her grandmother used to say, which she now finds silly. But the point of it appeared to be: whistling is an activity for boys, not girls, and deviation from gender roles won’t be tolerated

And I always assumed the “bad ends” involved a stew pot, though I didn’t know at the time that “crowing hens” was a real thing that happened
