sometimes I get told that I overthink things, from too many perspectives and in too many hypothetical scenarios

(usually by a coworker, when I ask a question where they think the answer is simple and I’ve thought about a bunch of ways it could be complex, and so I want an actual answer about how company policy addresses all the potential complexities, and they want to just be able to snark at me for asking a dumb question with a simple and obvious answer)

…but then I look at conversations other people have. and I am reassured that… no, I am definitely the reasonable one. other people just underthink things.

saw a post about being against the death penalty because we can’t trust the court system to judge people fairly for a punishment that final. And comments were like “yeah of course not. but if regular people go and kill someone who has done (unforgivable crime) then the law just shouldn’t intervene”

like. for how many seconds would you have to explore this scenario, before you realize it would be just a worse version of the same thing

…the same legal system still being trusted to make decisions about whether they think someone committed a crime they deserve to be killed for. Except this time having to make that decision 1. after the person has already been killed, and 2. somehow without any legal process

surely no way this could ever be abused at all.

accusations of overthinking are the hallmark of someone who’s just frustrated with me asking questions that make them think at all
