astercontrol:

soo I am not planning to make a habit of posting about Tron Ares, because that should really be left to the fans who have a lot of passion for it, no point in fanposting about stuff I’m not that interested in

However

my Pattern Recognizer is interested in everything, at least a little

because everything connects to everything, somehow or other

and

I guess this is getting its own post.

From my Ares initial impression post from yesterday:

…

“I liked some of the little programming details. And how they fit into some of the character stuff. For example I noticed how Julian asserts that he’s going to fix whatever "PEBCAK error” is causing Ares to have feelings. Found this amusing because considering what a PEBCAK error is, he’s admitting the feelings come ultimately from him. Ha.“

…

so the reference here is: programmers and tech support people sometimes say "PEBCAK error” to mean user error

it’s a way of being kind of snarky at a user who made a mistake. it stands for “Problem Exists Between Chair And Keyboard”

and it is very weird to me that Julian, who is extremely egotistical and does NOT think of himself as a user who makes mistakes, would use this term about his own errors.

a few possibilities here, I guess…

he may be having a rare moment of self-awareness.

or he may be blaming some other user, between some other chair and keyboard, who had access to Ares’ code

or, my favorite…

he was not actually thinking about what “PEBCAK error” literally means. As the guy who’s usually the programmer, he may have gotten used to using that term when talking to end-users, and using it just to mean “it’s your fault, not mine.”

he’s not yet accustomed to being in the position of programmer, located between chair and keyboard, leveling his accusations and blame at the program, who is situated squarely behind the keyboard.

…like a mother accidentally calling her kid a “son of a bitch.”

ha.
