in my experience, it is best to be in a semi-aroused state for optimal smut-writing.
Not so detached from horniness that one can't access the headspace where the best descriptions of it are generated
BUT also not so horny that you can write "he put his thingy in my whatever" and your imagination fills in the details so vividly that you mistakenly think you have written something hot
